The Local Area
Deltaville itself was once the boat building capital of the Chesapeake Bay and is situated on the eastern delta of land between the Rappahannock and Piankatank rivers as they converge into the Chesapeake Bay. This point is known as Stingray Point.
Stepping back in time, this point was so named because Captain John Smith, whilst exploring the Chesapeake Bay, was stung by a stingray here and only lived because a Native Indian maiden, Pocahontas, took him across to the north side of the Rappahannock river where she knew of an antidote for the sting, to cure him. This place is known as Antipoison Creek to this day.
We have historic houses here like the Kelly House, Woodport and Bell Air are but a few. The old Stingray Point Lighthouse, now on dry land and various different denominational churches of historic significance date back to the mid 1800's.
Just moments away are the Wineries of the Northern Neck. Go to the Northern Neck Wine Trail to attending a tasting. www.northernneckwinetrail.com .
We are an epicenter for visiting either the Gloucester Courthouse area and the surrounding areas of historic lands where some of the civil war battles have taken place and then we have recently had re-enactment anniversaries too; the Northern Neck, Stratford Hall and the birth place of Robert E Lee; Fredericksburg with its museums and history and then its fast train service to Washington DC, going south we have Yorktown, just and hour away where the French and the English troops fought historic battles and the French won! Mathews county has its own fishing tales and history, good country lanes with small town atmosphere, it is also just 20 minutes away.
